Message in a Bottle

Message in a Bottle
In a tree somewhere…Using found materials I will hang bottles from tree branches. There will be streamers (shimmery blues and greens) to create the idea of water. Mini leds inside the bottles (and perhaps additional strings of battery-operated twinkle lights) will create a peaceful, glowy effect at night. A small table nearby will provide pens and paper for community members’ use. After the notes are composed, they can then be attached (using decorated clothing pins) to the streamers or additional twine hanging from the tree. The notes will be remain on display until Saturday night when they will be collected and burned with the effigy.

This project was inspired by this year’s theme and, in great part, by recent events that have taken place in my own life. Over the last month or so I have been overwhelmed with the feeling that there has been so much left unsaid in my life and in my relationships with loved ones. Whether you have been holding onto a message of great importance, or you simply want to share a fleeting feeling or image, it can be cathartic to release control and share your secrets with the unknown.
With this installation I was hoping to create a beautiful and safe interactive space that would inspire the process of purification, closure, and renewal for all participants.
The interactive portion of the project will encourage members of the Engulf community to write down any and all notes or messages they have bottled up inside, either addressed to a specific individual or to the world at large. The notes will be hung on display, part of the installation, and then collected en masse and burned with the effigy.
